Sam advises trustees of defined benefit pension schemes on a wide range of investment issues, including strategy development, manager selection and risk management. He brings a fully integrated approach to investment and liability analysis, drawing on experience across both investment and actuarial disciplines.
Sam has worked with schemes of varying sizes—from a few million to several hundred million pounds—supporting them with ongoing strategy reviews, journey planning and transitions through to buy in. His work includes the design and implementation of LDI solutions and the development of risk management frameworks.
Alongside his consultancy work, Sam contributes to the development of Barnett Waddingham’s Corporate Sole Trustee (CST) proposition, helping to design practical, effective governance solutions for clients. He is also an active member of the firm’s Gender Equality Network.
Significant experience:
- Investment strategy review and development of journey plans: working with trustees and sponsors to set out clear goals and objectives for their investment strategy and then helping to design an investment strategy that will get them there.
- Risk management: for example, managing interest rate and inflation risk for schemes using LDI strategies, or setting affordable de-risk paths using trigger frameworks to capture opportunities.
- Implementation: including manager selection exercises as well as selecting the right level of delegation and method of implementation for schemes investments.
- Supporting schemes through buy in transactions: working with our Risk Transfer team or external advisors to help manage schemes’ investments as they approach insurance transactions.
- Corporate Sole Trustee (CST): working with independent trustee firms to develop a framework for delivering investment advice and monitoring in a way that supports the CST model – improving the decision-making and risk management of their schemes and ultimately delivering better outcomes for members and sponsoring employer alike.
