Melanie Durrant FIA CERA

Principal and Actuary

Melanie qualified as an actuary and a risk actuary in 2011. Her career at Barnett Waddingham has seen her work across a range of private sector pension schemes before specialising in advising funds in the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS). She is currently based in our Cheltenham office after spending a three year period in our Glasgow office.

She works closely with partners Graeme Muir and Barry McKay and she is responsible for managing a number of our LGPS clients. She provides regulatory, valuation, employer and accounting related advice, delivering high quality work with a focus on excellent client service. She also has several years experience of working in private sector pensions in our Cheltenham office in particular, working on University schemes.

Melanie prides herself on maintaining her personable and enthusiastic approach to work and her ethos is to form lasting relationships with colleagues – not only to create the best possible working environment but also to deliver the highest quality of work to clients. This culminated in her promotion to a Principal in 2019.

Significant experience:

  • funding and other advice to Local Authority Pension Funds
  • academy conversions, calculating the attributable deficit and contribution rate
  • advice on accounting disclosures for public sector employers including complex disclosures where employers are in surplus,or have ceased to trade or have pass-through arrangements in place
  • negotiating, calculating and agreeing a number of bulk transfers each year

Other expertise:

Melanie is a keen volunteer with the actuarial profession being a Careers Ambassador, she is also involved in recruitment and training within her local office. Melanie sits on various committees and speaks at industry events where she is highly regarded as an expert in public sector pensions. Melanie takes pride in using her knowledge to simplify technical issues for the benefit of clients and members alike.
