Sam heads up the firm’s Actuarial Calculations Team which specialises in carrying out technical calculations for external clients and various areas of the business.

He has a wide range of experience across all areas of actuarial consultancy work for Pension and Superannuation Plans in both the UK and Australia.  This experience includes valuations, investment strategy, benefit design, company accounting disclosures and modelling future cashflows of accumulation plans.

In addition to this work, Sam also has extensive experience in developing and running bespoke actuarial modelling software.

Significant experience:

  • provision of funding advice to a number of retirement benefit plans both as a Scheme Actuary in the UK and a RSE Actuary in Australia.
  • provision corporate advice to a wide range of sponsoring employers
  • development of actuarial modelling software including pension fund valuations and projection of future assets of large super funds
  • provision of detailed cashflow calculations for bulk annuity providers.

Career

Sam started his career with Barnett Waddingham in the Cheltenham Office in 2002 after graduating from Heriot Watt University with a degree in Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics.  He qualified as a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries in 2006 and became an Associate of the firm on 2011.In 2012 Sam moved to Australia to work for Willis Towers Watson in their Melbourne office where he advised the Trustees and Sponsoring

Employers of some of the largest corporate superannuation funds in the country.

In 2018, after six years in Australia, Sam decided to return to the UK and re-joined the Cheltenham office of Barnett Waddingham as an Associate to head up the Actuarial Calculations Team.

Sam became a Principal at Barnett Waddingham in June 2020.

Interests

In his spare time Sam is a keen tennis player and entertainer of his two small children.
