Principal and Head of Charity & Endowment Investment

Matt is our Head of Charity & Endowment Investment, leading the firm’s strategic thinking on our investment consulting proposition to charities, endowments and foundations. He also advises a number of clients on investment matters relating to their pension schemes, including where the sponsor is itself a not-for-profit.

He has extensive experience in investment consultancy, working closely with clients ranging in size from under £10m to over £1bn. Matt is enthusiastic and engaging in his approach to communication. He is able to think outside the box and devise innovative but pragmatic solutions to his clients’ needs. Matt is a big believer in purposeful decision making – he is adept at providing clarity to what can be complex situations, enabling his clients to make decisions with confidence.

Matt’s expertise ranges from consideration of investment governance frameworks and objective setting to asset allocation, manager selection, sustainable investing and monitoring.


Significant experience:

  • Robust investment policy design that meets the demands of regulators and various stakeholders.
  • Strategic asset allocation design and review to meet long-term objectives.
  • Effective strategy implementation through selecting appropriate manager(s), monitoring and review – able to provide constructive challenge.
  • Responsible and sustainable investment policies and practical implementation.
  • Project managing the creation of a step-change update to Barnett Waddingham’s investment monitoring service.

Other expertise:

Matt is on the Investment Committee of the Association of Consulting Actuaries. He is actively involved in improving engagement within the investment team and across the firm. He placed second in Actuarial Post’s ‘Stars of the Future’ in 2017. He was also previously a member of an Institute and Faculty of Actuaries working party, looking at identifying and defining investment strategies and how these might evolve in the future.
