Ben is an experienced Scheme Actuary responsible for a range of services to various pension schemes.

He also advises employers on their pension arrangements and has experience of scheme mergers, sales and purchase work, and other corporate transactions.

Since the PPF’s inception, Ben has provided expert advice to employers and trustees to help significantly reduce their PPF levy costs.  He has also had considerable experience of guiding employers and trustees through the actuarial valuation process to produce a funding outcome that is satisfactory to all parties, including the Pensions Regulator.

Ben acts as Scheme Actuary to several schemes, with assets ranging from around £10 million to over £500 million, providing strategic advice, often in conjunction with their investment and covenant advisers.  Ben also has considerable expertise on matters relating to accounting disclosures and PPF levy management.


Significant experience:

  • experience of dealing with many stakeholders, including the Pensions Regulator, through complex valuation and company refinancing negotiations
  • advice on PPF levy reduction measures, saving clients hundreds of thousands of pounds
  • advice on company accounting disclosures under many accounting standards, including IAS 19, IAS 19R, FRS 17, FRS 102 and US GAAP
  • providing advice on several wind-ups and bulk annuity transactions, including guaranteed minimum pension (GMP) equalisation exercises.

Other expertise:

Until recently, Ben chaired Barnett Waddingham’s Pensions Actuarial Technical Committee, which considers important topical actuarial issues and ideas and produces firm-wide guidance.
