Graham Cooper

Senior Consultant, Executive Pensions

Graham has been a qualified actuary for more than 40 years, mostly working in pensions. He was until recently a non-executive director of Pension Insurance Corporation, one of the new ‘buy-out’ insurers. Back in 1989, Graham invented the name ‘FURBS’ for unapproved pension arrangements.

Within Barnett Waddingham, Graham mainly advises companies and remuneration committees on pension arrangements for their senior executives in a manner they understand. He then helps them to organize the pension arrangements for their senior staff to minimise the impact of annual allowance and lifetime allowance charges.

Graham also advises senior executives on their options both whilst accumulating their pension funds and when they reach retirement. Recent clients have included a number of University Vice-Chancellors and heads of county councils.

More widely, Graham has considerable experience in the valuation of executive share arrangements subject to complicated performance conditions. He also is an independent trustee on a number of pension schemes, including Arcadia Senior Executives Pension Scheme and the UBM pension schemes.

Significant experience:

  • advice to UK based employers in dealing with the problems faced by senior staff caused by the recent (and seemingly never ending) pensions tax changes
  • wider advice to senior staff to enable them to understand their pension arrangements better
  • before joining Barnett Waddingham, Graham set up software for valuing share options subject to complex performance conditions, he retains an active interest in this work
