Malcolm McLean comments on ONS study which reveals that pensioners and teenagers are the age groups most satisfied with their lives

The results of an ONS Study published today reveal that pensioners and teenagers are the age groups most satisfied with their lives. The lowest rating for life satisfaction and well-being was found in the middle age group between 45 and 54. Commenting on these findings, Malcolm McLean, consultant, Barnett Waddingham said:

“One of the factors which anecdotal evidence suggests may well be a growing cause of disquiet and concern amongst today’s middle aged generation people is the uncertainty about when and how they will be able to retire from work.

“With state pension ages continuing to be moved back and possible inadequate or no private pension provision to back them up, many appear to be waking up to the realisation that their plans for any sort of early retirement will not be possible, and they may well have to contemplate working on past what they had previously seen as normal retirement age.

“Although we often blandly talk about people ‘sleep-walking’ into a financially uncertain old age, it seems that this generation at least is becoming all too aware of the problem they face both now and in the years ahead. For someone in their late forties/early 50s, however, there is still time to develop a pension or other savings plan to enable them to retire at somewhere near their desired age.

“The important thing is to seek financial advice and take action as soon as possible.”
