Barnett Waddingham announces Pension Scheme Valuation seminars for February 2012

Barnett Waddingham, the UK’s leading independent firm of actuaries and consultants, has announced a series of free nationwide seminars in February focusing on the challenges to valuing pension schemes in today’s economic climate.

The seminars will look at the effect of volatile equity markets and low bond yields on pension schemes, considering the potential impact of increased deficits and the different ways of valuing these from the perspective of the different stakeholders. It will also cover innovative ways of managing deficits and the latest information on life expectancy.

John Harrison, Partner, says: “With bond yields at record lows and volatile equity markets putting pressure on asset values, actuarial valuations are currently proving to be a challenge for trustees and sponsors.  There are many ways of valuing a pension scheme depending on the purpose of the valuation and this adds to the confusion faced by those managing schemes. For example, many people struggle to understand why the value ascribed to liabilities differs for the purposes of funding, accounting and settling liabilities through a buyout. Our February seminar will explain what drives pension scheme valuations and how the results based on current market conditions can be treated.”
