Historic Current Pensions Issues Seminars
For the last few years, Barnett Waddingham has been running a series of free seminars on current pension topics for its clients and friends. The information below sets out the topics covered in the Winter and Spring 2002/3 seminar programme. The seminars took place in the Amersham, Cheltenham, Leeds and London offices at the times shown. All seminars were held in the local Barnett Waddingham office.
September 2002
Pickering Simplification
Alan Pickering's review of private pension legislation gave rise to his report, which called for major simplification and a fundamental overhaul of the current system. This had major implications for every employer in the country. The Government issued its response and a consultation paper in Autumn 2002. Our seminar examined each of the Pickering recommendations in detail, and considered how the Government might respond.
October 2002
Pension investment: Manager of Managers
Hiring and firing investment managers is a decision of huge financial significance but one that pension scheme trustees find very difficult. In addition, historical analysis suggested that the appointment of a single active manager is actually quite a risky strategy. However, a "manager of managers" provides an alternative approach to active management but with greater focus on risk control. Our seminar explained all!
November 2002
Controlling the defined benefit risk
There are a number of ways of controlling the risk in a defined benefit scheme without abandoning the concept altogether. By November 2002, a number of companies had started to recognise the competitive advantage of retaining a defined benefit scheme albeit with a greater degree of risk control. Our seminar explored these alternatives.
January 2003
FRS17: Where do we go from here?
Full implementation of FRS17 had been delayed due to the potential impact of the International Accounting Standard, IAS19 on UK Company Accounts by 2005. Were we dealing with one accounting standard or two and what were the implications for UK companies?
February 2003
Pickering simplification: The aftermath
How did the Government respond to Pickering's report and what did the future hold for occupational pension schemes in the UK? You didn't want to miss this seminar!
March 2003
MFR replacement
We couldn't run a series of seminars without our old friend, the Minimum Funding Requirement. The MFR was due to be abolished but would its replacement be any better or worse?
April 2003
Inland Revenue simplification
As well as the Pickering review we were also hoping for major simplification of the Inland Revenue's rules affecting occupational pension schemes. In this case there may have been very little consultation because of the potential tax implications of these changes. Therefore this seminar got straight down to business and considered the impact of these changes and how to deal with them.
