Annual Amersham vs London cricket match
Mihir Shah from the London office reports on the Amersham-London cricket match.
Another year, another glorious day for the traditional London vs Amersham fixture at Seer Green.
London's innings opened with promise, almost suggesting that the inability to field a full team might not be a handicap, at least as far as batting was concerned. Chris Watts and Mihir Shah put on over 40 for the first wicket before the former was obliged to retire under the "25 and retire" rule. Wildfowl enthusiasts were then treated to a series of fine ducks with only Paul Leandro keeping the innings together before the openers returned for further plunder, finishing with a total of 94 for 7 off 25 overs. Notable performances in the field came from Ian Ward (with a fine run-out), Nilesh Dodhia (again demonstrating cat-like reflexes behind the stumps) and some tight bowling by Andrew Twells and James Harrington.
Lauren Gray and the other Amersham ladies provided a splendid tea as the sun continued to beat
Charity being the greatest of all the virtues, Amersham lent London a few players to plug gaps in the field. Captain Watts opened the bowling with some electrifying pace (perhaps mindful of the fact that stand-in wicket-keeper Ward would be coming in to bat in due course) and Chris Bowring kept his line and length. The damage, however, was done by Adam Walker's off-spin, which accounted for five batsmen (including three bowled middle-stump). Keeper Ward saw enough of the Walker action to join James Harrington in carting the ball back over the bowler's head for six towards the end of his spell, as the pair moved the score on rapidly. David Noel hit the winning run with four overs to spare.
The trophy was duly presented to the winning captain, Andrew Twells. Man of the match went to Walker for his five-wicket haul.
Thanks again to all those who took part, and especially to Ian Ward for his organisation and Lauren and all of the ladies for the refreshments. The scorecard can be seen below:
