Barnett Waddingham 6-a-side football
Jon Bridger reports.
Barnett Waddingham held its annual 6-a-side football competition on Friday 4 August. In a "Champions League"-style format all seven teams played each other with the top four going through to the semi-finals. Cheltenham Actuarial eventually beat Leeds 1-0 in the final thanks to a goal from Nick Griggs. London Admin and Amersham Admin were the beaten semi-finalists.
This was a tremendous achievement by the Leeds office as it was the first time that they had progressed past the group stage of this competition. It seems a far cry from the days when Leeds relied almost entirely on the footballing ability of Martin "Chopper" Harris and Mark "bite yer legs" Underwood. Leeds office supremo Mark Underwood missed this year's event as he was on holiday in Majorca, highlighting the lengths to which some partners will go to avoid playing football! However Mark was said to be "well chuffed" when the team rang him at 3:00am to tell him the news.
Cheltenham Actuarial reached the knock-out stages by beating Cheltenham Admin in their final group game. The winner was a cheeky back heel from actuarial student Ben Roach which condemned Cheltenham Admin to an early exit from the competition. By a rather unfortunate coincidence Ben is about to spend six weeks in the administration team as part of his overall pensions training - shades of Denis Law sending Manchester United into the second division for those readers with long enough memories!
