Historic Trustee Training

Mark Da Silva comments on the importance of preparation for the duties that were faced by UK occupational pension scheme trustees in 2000-2001. He also gives details of Barnett Waddingham's training courses that took place in 2000 and 2001.

Proper trustee training was more important in 2000 than ever before. The Pensions Act 1995 placed significant responsibilities on trustees and imposed penalties if these were not met. We offered specialist training for trustees in the form of one-day seminars. These were held in each of our UK offices and could be arranged off-site for larger groups. The introductory course was aimed primarily at new trustees but it was also a useful refresher for existing trustees on their duties and obligations. We also held every quarter a half-day morning seminar on current pensions issues for trustees and other pensions professionals.

The cost (before VAT) of the introductory trustee training course was £280 for the first attendee and £220 for each subsequent attendee. The cost (before VAT) of the current pensions issues half-day seminar was £120.

In 1999-2000 we held six "introductory" courses covering all four offices and five "bespoke" courses which were specifically designed for a particular group of trustees. Guest speakers included pensions lawyers Elisa Gatti (Linklaters), Jane Kola (Sacker & Partners) and Ingrid Everson (Eversheds). The attendees represented client companies of each of our UK offices. The full-day seminar provided a basic grounding in the diverse aspects of trusteeship and pension issues. In addition, delegates had the opportunity to discuss case studies and share experiences with other trustees. Our seminars were arranged for smaller groups specifically to allow a high level of participation.
