Barnett Waddingham Website Activity

We launched our website (www.barnett-waddingham.co.uk) in June 1999 with the aim of providing timely and interesting articles of benefit to our clients through this ever expanding medium. We have tried to develop an easy to navigate interface, free of clutter; if you have any comments on the site, please pass them on to us by using our feedback form.

In the first nine months since launch, our log files have recorded a total of 38,023 hits consisting of 7,203 visits by 3,742 visitors. However, this is not the end of the story. The log files provide details of which hosts have accessed the website's server. A host is a machine on the Internet, eg a PC, a mainframe, a proxy server and so on. A proxy server may retrieve a single copy of a page and then hand it out to any number of people or a mainframe may have more than one (possibly hundreds of) users all accessing pages from the same machine. So there may be many more visitors than we know about.

Unfortunately there is no way to determine the exact number of people who have accessed and read our pages. It is rather like selling a magazine, you can never tell how many people it has been passed round, you only know how many you have sold. The statistics give an indication of popularity, but have to be taken with a very generous pinch of salt.

It may be instructive to see how these visits have varied throughout the website's history. The graph of hits by month (above right) shows that December was a rather peculiar month. This could be because there was less interest in the website during December although December was also the month in which our ISP (Internet Service Provider) moved our website from one server to another and we have a suspicion that their logging software was not working properly initially.
