A busy month for international fixtures
Senior partner Huw Wynne-Griffith travelled to St Petersburg to address the 8th Baltic Conference on 1 October on the role of the actuary in an economy in transition. In many countries actuaries are known principally for their role in life assurance. Huw explained how the skills of actuaries could assist in wider areas and in particular in all aspects of pension provision including state arrangements. His troubles started when the translators handed him back his notes just before his talk started and he discovered they had made an excellent job of "shuffling the deck". Huw carried on regardless - not the best decision he has made. And it rained!
Huw then headed for Monaco and the bi-annual conference of EFRP (European Federation for Retirement Planning) and the NAPF. A major concern discussed was the future burden of unfunded pension arrangements on countries such as France, Germany and Italy and the risk that countries such as the UK, Ireland and Holland who have degrees of advance funding may end up sharing the bill.
The first of a planned series of joint conferences involving the affiliated firms of EURACS and NORACS was held in the South of France during October. Veteran traveller and EURACS representative Huw was joined by our partner in charge of liaison with NORACS, Nick Salter. Tony Leandro also attended as the conference explored areas of mutual interest between the two bodies.
