Senior Partner travels East

Senior partner Huw Wynne-Griffith writes about his forthcoming travels to the EURACS conference in Latvia and to the Baltic conference in St Petersburg.

At the 8th Baltic Conference on 1st October in St Petersburg, Huw speaks on the subject of the role of the actuary in an economy in transition. He shares the platform with the UK Government Actuary (Chris Daykin) who talks on the actuary and state schemes. Huw's emphasis will be on the need for reliable statistics, the way to tackle the investment issues, the transfer of responsibilities from the state to the private sector and in particular to employers. They will also raise the matters of governance as well as regulation.

At the EURACS conference on 16/17 October in Riga (Latvia), Huw will be speaking on the Russian Experience. Huw is part of a team financed by the TACIS program of the European Union which is advising on the reform of pensions and social welfare in Russia. (Workshop on Russian Pensions Arrangments)

Huw will also be joined by Danny Wilding, who will be speaking on "Recent pension developments in the UK". Danny's talk will be on the following themes:

  • State and occupational pension reform - (Stakeholder, S2P)
  • Defined Benefit v Defined Contribution issues - (costs, transferability, targeting)
  • Benefit design - (indirect sex inequality, divorce)
  • Trusteeship - (Member-Nominated Trustees, indemnity, Ombudsman's powers)
  • Trends in investment strategies and actuarial funding
