Scheme Funding Negotiations

The ever increasing compliance burden placed on trustees is inevitably leading them to play "hard ball" with their sponsoring employers over the funding of schemes.  Trustees are required by law to take advice from their scheme actuary on funding matters and to examine the employer's "covenant" when setting contribution requirements.  Often employers are left in an unequal bargaining position by having no access to specialist advice when negotiating with the trustees.

At Barnett Waddingham we provide a totally independent employer advice service.  Our aim is to empower scheme sponsors in their negotiations with the trustees thereby allowing them to regain some control.  This can range from simply explaining the funding process and trustees' issues to the sponsor to structuring bespoke financial solutions to deal with specific needs.  In any event, the solution should take account of the commercial reality of the negotiation whilst at the same time allowing the trustees to carry out their responsibilities.

By keeping up-to-date with the latest market developments we are able to analyse each situation on its facts and set out solutions to meet specific objectives.
