Profile

In September 2008 I will have been working at Barnett Waddingham for eleven years having joined the Cheltenham office straight from university. During this time I have seen the Cheltenham office more than double in size, and after seven years I qualified as an actuary in 2004 and been made a Partner in June 2008.

My current role and responsibilities

I am now responsible for a group of clients ranging in size from a few million pounds to several billion. I am the Scheme Actuary or the lead contact for these clients.  This means I am responsible for organising the work and approving calculations and reports. It is also good to get out of the office and I attend meetings for all these clients.

At Barnett Waddingham there are opportunities to get involved in a wide variety of work. I am particularly interested in corporate advice (as opposed to the advice given to the scheme’s trustees) and I have been able to get heavily involved in this area. However, I have had to go out and win the clients first!

As well as client responsibilities you are encouraged to get involved in various office level and firm wide projects and committees. These vary from ensuring we keep up to date with changes in pensions legislation to marketing and organising social events. My main non client work is as part of the firm’s Pensions Actuarial Technical Committee. It is responsible for ensuring the firm stays up to date with any actuarial issues that will affect the pensions team. A very wide ranging remit but the workload gets shared around all the offices!

As a Partner, I have become move involved in the running of the office and managing the team. They do not teach you how to do this in the actuarial exams so it became another skill I have had to develop.

Barnett Waddingham LLP

As I joined the Cheltenham office when the actuarial team was very small I was given lots of responsibility early on in my career and I was keen to take this on. Despite significant growth in the last few years it remains a firm where you feel you can make a difference.

It has also remained an extremely friendly and sociable firm. We are currently in the middle of the Barnett Waddingham sports season and I have taken part in the firm’s golf, netball and croquet tournaments in the last few weeks. The main event, the BW football tournament, takes place later in the summer.
