Actuarial Trainee

NAME: Katy Eddison
JOB TITLE: Actuarial Assistant
UNIVERSITY: Leeds
DEGREE: BA Economics

First Impressions

It is a well known fact that first impressions are everything. From my first contact with Barnett Waddingham I was impressed by the warm welcome I received. I also got an impression that within this friendly firm, there was a strong work ethic that would be generously rewarded both financially and with other benefits. I have not been proved wrong.

Responsibility

I joined the pensions actuarial team in the Amersham office and have been involved in a variety of tasks. These have ranged from calculating individual member benefits and data validation, to participating in actuarial valuations, through to the winding up of a pension scheme.

Currently, I assist colleagues with work for various clients but have recently been placed on a client team, which means that I have a direct responsibility for some of the work relating to that client.

Within the firm there is a flat team structure; this means I work with partners, actuaries, fellow actuarial students, as well as other teams.

Study

No-one who has taken an actuarial exam can deny how challenging it is or how important it is to study. At Barnett Waddingham we are given a generous support package which includes study time during the week along with a mentor who is on hand to give help and offer advice.

Social Life

"Work hard, play hard!" At Barnett Waddingham there is a great social life. There are numerous office events throughout the year but the inter-office events are always a highlight. These range from sporting events like football and netball to the annual Christmas party in London. The inter-office events are a great opportunity to meet and socialise with staff from other offices. As a new member of the Barnett Waddingham team these events are also an opportunity to ‘’put a name to a face’’.

I have not been disappointed. My first impressions of a welcoming employer offering great opportunities for career development, in a friendly, supportive environment, have been confirmed during my first few months at Barnett Waddingham.
