What will I be doing as a trainee?

Pensions Actuarial

As an actuarial trainee you will work as part of the Pensions Actuarial team. You will experience a wide range of work in all aspects of our business, enabling you to learn exactly what an actuarial trainee does and to have client contact and attend client meetings wherever possible. Working closely with Partners and Associates you will have the opportunity to take on responsibility for client projects from an early stage as well as learn the day to day responsibilities of actuarial work.

All graduates when they join the firm undergo a period of induction, including attending a main induction event with our other graduates. The aim of the induction is to introduce you to the firm and to meet the other graduates who will be sharing the same experiences as you during your qualifying period.

Training sessions will be given by various members of the Pensions Actuarial Team during your first two weeks. These sessions will cover basic actuarial mathematical techniques, excel manipulation, mortality, investments, typical pension scheme design, leaving service benefits, an introduction to valuations and legislation and guidance notes as well as other topics.

All our actuarial trainees are assigned a mentor. Your mentor will have regular meetings with you to discuss your progress in both work and study. Your mentor will be a senior member of the team and will be your first point of contact to answer any questions and provide support.

On joining, you will embark upon a series of exams set by the Actuarial Profession with the goal of qualifying as a Fellow of either the Institute or Faculty of Actuaries. Your path to qualification will, with the support of your mentor, be chosen by you.  Barnett Waddingham will provide you every support to help you achieve this goal with its generous study package, including study days and funding for external courses, together with a financial reward for passing exams.
